Dr. Emily is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. She has extensive training in the hands-on form of therapy called myofascial release (MFR), including specific internal manual therapy techniques. Myofascial release is very gentle in nature and safe to perform on mom at all stages of pregnancy and to the baby soon after birth. Dr. Emily has completed post-graduate training in safe exercise strategies for special populations including pregnant women.
A typical physical therapy plan will include therapeutic exercises, manual therapy techniques, modalities and patient education to help a mother prepare her body for pregnancy, giving birth and to reduce post-partum recovery time. Listed below are some therapy components Dr. Emily addresses in her treatments:
• Treating pain from sciatica, the round ligaments, pelvis, back and neck
• Develop appropriate and individualized exercise programs for strength, flexibility, and endurance
• Preparing breasts to promote breastfeeding success
• Treating various latching and lactation issues
• Decreasing risk of diastasis recti occurring (separation of abdominal muscles)
• Techniques to decrease the risk of an episiotomy being performed
• Treating previous c-section or episiotomy scars
• Reducing recovery time from a c-section or episiotomy
• Improve feelings of fatigue
• Treating balance issues
• Decreasing headaches
• Treat incontinence issues
• Treating trauma from hard labor, forceps and vacuum use during delivery
• Adaptation exercises for mom and baby
“I began to develop a deeper interest for pregnancy and natural childbirth when my husband and I decided it was time to start a family. In addition to Bradley Birth classes, I received regular myofascial release treatments. I feel these treatments made my body more balanced and open to carrying a child and as a result, I had very few pregnancy complaints and no complications. I was able to exercise every day of my pregnancy and thus was able to tolerate the rigors of giving birth much easier than if I had been sedentary. Our daughter was born in January 2006 with only the assistance of a midwife and my husband in a hospital setting. She has been a very content and easy-going baby and I feel the steps I took to care for my body helped make my pregnancy and delivery wonderful. Throughout my motherly journey, I have learned how incredibly intuitive, natural and beautiful the whole process can be. I would like to help other women have as positive an experience as I did.”
