Sabrina M. Foulks, BA, Birth Doula, CBE

Birthing Empowerment and Doula Services, LLC- “Let your birth experience be your own…”

I am the owner of Birthing Empowerment and Doula Services LLC and have been a birth doula since 2006. I earned my B.A. in Physiology from the University of Minnesota and will be completing my second degree in Nursing May 2010. I am continuing in order to pursue my Masters in Nurse-Midwifery. I have chosen this field because it is natural calling for me, an internal passion. I believe Midwifery and doula work allow a woman to become an extension of herself and interject her feelings, decisions, and desires into her envisioned birth experience.

My passion for childbirth, pregnancy, and breastfeeding was always there but sincerely grew after the birth of my daughter in 2005. I ended up having a birth doula attend my birth and it could not have been a more rejuvenating and empowering experience. I want nothing more than to pass this same experience onto more women. I believe that birth is a special passage in life for mom and baby; the extent to how a woman’s body works internally and externally in the midst of labor is the exfoliating factor to the surrendering nature of birth.

My birth doula services include: FREE birth doula consultation visit, belly-casting, individualized prenatal counseling and education, extensive breastfeeding support up to 6 months postpartum, guidance in formulation of a birth plan unique to your needs, birth photography, and (2) postpartum visits. I also am a Certified Childbirth Educator and Certified Breastfeeding Educator/Counselor; which allows me teach private childbirth education classes and breastfeeding classes that are tailored to meet the schedule and needs unique to each family. I am open in serving as a birth doula in either the home-birth setting or hospital setting.

I view it as a true honor when a family invites me in as their “birth doula” into an experience as sacred and intimate as the birth of their child.

“Birth is a key life passage for women. But modern America has become pre-occupied with the arrival of the baby-to-be, and lost touch with birth’s profound impact on the mother-to-be, herself.”—Yana Cortlund.

“Having a doula was very important in my birth experience. Being a single mother from the moment I found out I was pregnant, I knew I would need that extra support at the bedside. I needed my own personal labor coach who would not leave my side. I knew nurses, doctors, and medical students would come and go. Family would irritate me during my emotionally vulnerable time. Friends would fight over who would be in there with me and would probably just tell me to get the epidural so I would stop screaming. However, screaming is how I dealt with each contraction and I needed someone who could handle that and keep my birth plan and my birth experience goals their and my priority. I knew from the start I did not want an epidural and I wanted to do everything I could to avoid that. It was with Sabrina’s help that I was able to accomplish that goal even after 28 hours of back labor. I got everything out of my birthing experience that I wanted. I used the tub, which helped a great deal. Sabrina was at my side the whole time encouraging me to stay strong and telling me how great I was doing. I used my Native American CD and my flameless lavender scented candles to help relax me. I took one contraction at a time and without my doula Sabrina, I do not think I could have done it.” – Milwaukee, Marla (1st Baby, 2009)
